Rail transport is also known as train transport. It is a means of transport, on vehicles which run on tracks (rails or railroads). It is one of the most important, commonly used and very cost effective modes of commuting and goods carriage over long, as well as, short distances. One of the advantages of rail transport is that it is actually the most eco-friendly way to travel other than human-powered transport such as walking or cycling. The greenhouse effect of gas emissions per kilometre on rail transport is 80% less than, for example, cars.
Many trains operate solely on electrical power. They get the electricity from a third rail, or electrical line, which is present along the track. Transformers transfer the voltage from the lines, and the electrical current enables the motors on the wheels to move.
